Pine Beetle Facts

The main concern for people living in Pine Beetle infected areas is the threat of wildfires. A small fire caused by humans or natural incidents can quickly spread among trees that have turned brown, and died due to the Pine Beetle. Below are photographs taken before and after the fire at Farmer's Corner near Summit High School last fall.

The recently drafted legislation that will be proposed as an amendment to the Healthy Forest Restoration Act, makes money available to communities within high fire danger areas that have community wildfire plans in place.

Summit County has been working on a wildfire plan under the leadership of Steven Hill. The draft of the plan in pdf form is available here: Summit County Wildfire Plan.
